As soon as I saw this thread I knew the uber economists known as Dune and Delldays would weigh in with fascinating intellectual insight.

Dukes of Hazzard. Nuff said.

It seems that the PST has gained a total of 335 pledges out of the 1,000 by say they need by the 15th. So at £2.50 a go that's a total of £837.50 that they have definitely raised. Probably fair to assume that 20% will not pay the next £97.50. I don't think they're going to be in a position to offer Mr Birch an option next week...

The George pub is just off the High Street in Castleton and does excellent ales like Black Sheep on tap. It also does a mean rabbit pie which is prepared and cooked on the premises.

I wonder how long Carla Bruni will stay with Sarkozy...

Without new nuke in France, the UK proposals are not economically viable as they would make profit by benefiting from R&D costs picked up by French plants. The exact same scenario has happened with Germany which Merkel has taken anti-nuke after Fukushima. The knock-on effect has been that RWE and E.on (both German companies) have announced they are dropping new nuclear plant plans at Oldbury and Wylfa. Wylfa is probably the best nuke site in the country also! RWE and E.on have explained that new UK nukes only make sense if they share the cost with new nukes in Germany.

There will be a fairly immediate effect on UK energy policy as Hollande is anti-nuclear. While that does not mean France will abandon nuclear power overnight (it generates over 80% of all its electricity from nuclear compared to about 15% in the UK), it does mean that is likely that the state-owned EDF will be told to wrap up new nuclear projects and concentrate on other forms of power generation. So that will mean the proposed new nukes at Hinckley Point and Bradwell will be put on hold as EDF attempts to sell it on its majority shareholdings in those sites. The two sites would have each been about 3GW and could supply about 10% of the UK's electricity needs.

Appy has kept some dignity, but it doesn't make him the next manager of WBA for sure.

I'm not sure about this either. Maybe BC isn't too. But better to be in control than not.

I think it's the view he's £17m down and wants some of it back, by whatever means as he has previously stated. That can be via paras or Tesco, he doesn't mind. He's better off in control of proceedings than not.

Well, you decide... Fracking offers the possibility of cheap gas in the future. Although it may cause earthquakes, increased greenhouse gas emissions and possibly mining in the south not too many miles away from Southampton... No guarantee that the gas is there to get yet either. Alternatively, push on with new nukes, energy from waste, biomass, carbon capture and more wind power... You all want cheap and/or green electricity on demand into the future, don't you? Make your minds up and state it here.

I think the good and amazing thing about this trial is the way that the majority of the Norwegian people, press and politicians are staying objective despite the temptation to play to Brevik's wishes to cause further consternation in the country. I wonder whether the UK press and politicians would be able to handle a similar "politically engendered" event if it happened here in such a way. God hope it never does.

Nigel Farage confirms that some Tory MP's are in discussions to defect
TopGun replied to dune's topic in The Lounge
Farage is a fruit loop and inadvertently Ed Miliband's biggest friend. -
That's the key point. The questions not answered are those that will cause Trevor trouble.

Yes, that is their main business. Getting them in to do an inventory is a very big clue about where Birch thinks this is going.

But I think this is new territory. Portsmouth did come out of admin with a CVA. But it has failed and they are back in admin. No precedents.

Argentina upping the ante on the Falklands....
TopGun replied to doddisalegend's topic in The Lounge
Good article by John Simpson about the whole situation here. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17576856 Simpson contends that Argentina are in no place militarily to start another conflict and the Argentine President is using the Falklands as a diversionary issue from other domestic problems. It may be true. Simpson is slightly wrong when he states that the Argentine Air Force has had no upgrades since 1982 as they took a number of rebuilt and upgraded A4 Skyhawks from the US in the late 1990s. But he's probably right overall about the Argentine military position as those aircraft are not likely to make much of a dent against a few defending Typhoons and Tornados and a T45 destroyer.
