I think it really comes down to having a clear identity on how you want to play and getting the right players for that. If you look at Brentfords transfer history since joining the PL, there's no real huge (in modern terms) outlay on one specific player - Igor Thiago for 33 milion Euro is the record on Transfermarkt. They don't really sell for loads either. It will be interesting to see how they do if Frank leaves. Brighton on the other hand actually do spend quite heavily on individuals but they have sold really well. They've done especially well in their managerial appointments. Something we have struggled with since Ralph left (Martin aside until this season) That should be the priority this summer. How do we want to play, do we have the players for it and do we have the manager for it. If the answer to either of those last two is no, change the first part. As this season has proven if you don't have the players to execute the vision, you're doomed to failure.

The first half (and the Ramsdale error "goal") were all things that has me shaking my head game after game. The stand off defending, backing off constantly allowing for opponents to get 40-60 yards upfield and not closing down crosses have been a staple of this slump period of the last few years. Even last season was the same. It drives me mental. The Juric results (Brentford aside) feel like one of those streaks that teams go on in the PL. Bad runs of form where things could go either way. The problem is the wretched results prior to his appointment. I'm pleased we are playing more direct, not long but direct. To my eye anyway. Said it after Brentford I think but I would ditch the 3CB's especially as Bree seems to be one of them now. Add another CM and go with a diamond and the split strikers as we have been. KWP right side, Manning the other with Onuachu/Archer and Kamaldeen up top. Basic sure, but I think we can at least be competitive enough to get the required points to beat the 11 point sword hanging over us.

The touch tight defending every single game is baffling

Something I have thought for a while and something that has continued under Juric. What benefits are there from playing 5 at the back. I'm sure people will say, maybe rightly, that its 3 and the "wing backs" are supposed to push forward etc. I understand that part, but imo we went to 5ATB to try and prevent shipping goals. Which is what happens with a lot of managers when things come off the rails. So if thats the case, its failed miserably. I personally think it's completely limited us in attack, which lets be honest was woeful at the best of times anyway. It's nullified the only spark we showed with Dibling and to my mind does not fit the limited squad we have. Not the biggest issue by any means, but with a midfield as porous and immobile as ours is, it's an easy tweak I think is being overlooked

It's almost certainly too late for us at this stage, but that's the exactly the type of result that keeps teams in the division. Teams like us will more often than not play poorly in comparison to the opposition. That's fine. You have to find a way to stay in games and not lose. A few more of those this season and we would have been in a much healthier position. Newcastle away, Leicester at home (should have won I know), Villa away. There are probably a couple more I am forgetting. That puts us on 9 points, which is still not great but it's in touching distance. The way we've played the last two games to me smacks of needs must. I can't imagine any U21 managers these days would get hired by being as direct as what we have been. Rusk has done well in his short stint and I was grateful to see us looking more solid and compact.

Just look like a semi-organised defensive unit. I am so sick of wide open spaces all over the pitch and having a feeling we are going to concede from any attack the opposition put together

To counter my Corberan point earlier, the more I think about it, the more I believe it SR won't want to pay a release clause/compensation again. Terzic would have been a good option (still would be) if we had a better chance of survival. Plays 4-3-3 (IMO our best formation) and is available. Can't se eit happening though.

Not a popular opinion I know, but I like RM and defended him for a really long time. Was only after the Chelsea game and his blasé attitude to conceding which made me change my mind. I will always be thankful for Wembley, same as I am whenever I see Pardew. Days like that are few and far between for clubs like us. Going forward I just want a manager who can organise a defence. I am so, so tired of watching limp, stand offish defending. I wouldn't mind Corberan with an eye on next season.

Yeah I would as it goes, as I have eyes and see a manager who is completely wedded to a style of playing that is ill fitted to the players he has at his disposal. However, despite defeat after defeat and mistake after mistake he doesn't change. So, in my opinion, he's either being self-centred and showcasing himself to other potential suitors, or he's stupid.

Russell Martin on Ange Postecoglou: "When I see him in the media, I see a man with conviction and someone who does not compromise on his values and I admire him a lot. It has got him to managing in the Champions League." There it is. This is all about showcasing himself above all else. The "Martin way" is more important than the survival of Southampton FC in the Premier League.

I for one cant wait for Lumley to roll the ball out to <insert player running on the half turn and not looking> only for Son to nick in for the 4th time and open the scoring. And then watch it again and again and again....... Still at least we will be brave and proud to do it "our way"

I've defended RM more than most but it finally clicked with me after the Chelsea game. The way he was so blasé about "giving away a couple of goals" blew my mind. It's almost certainly way too late for this season but I honestly believe we should have been way more competitive this year. His stubbornness to keep doing the same stupid things over and over again has us done for and I now can't wait to see him leave.

I'd agree with this. It's tiny margins (as there are with all strikers other than the elite.)

I'm not sure where I gave justification to it. I was simply trying to give it some rationalisation. Again, as I said, I don't agree with the strategy. On the other hand I dont think it's a case of, instead of buying lot's of 10 - 20 million pound players, buy 3 or 4 30 - 40 million pound players. Those players are simply not going to want to join a team, that even before this atrocious start to the season was heavy favourites to be relegated. IMO of course.

I guess if you look at some of our recruitment in the summer (Wood & Edwards) this gives further credence to the idea of Yo-Yoing You likely sell THB and JB, Edwards and Wood are already "in the building" with a year of working with Martin. You'll flip Fernandes (similar to how we did with Charley) The rest is much of a muchness. I don't agree with it btw, but I can see why they may have approached the recruitment in that way

Glad to see it mentioned previously, but that Sulemana chance was huge. To end up making a non decision was utterly infuriating. He could cut back inside or shoot earlier. I was so angry😆 Overall, awful collapse that was quite avoidable. Will get lost in the fallout but what a player Fernandes is.

Saturday has really solidified for me the worries I was trying to overlook due to the promotion last season. I know he rubs people the wrong way and his "style" obsession is a bit too much, but I like RM and am grateful for last season. However, I think one of the guys on TSP today nailed it, he's giving "looking after himself vibes" and thats a bad slope to be on. I think I would change it now.

I didn't renew my ST this season due to my seat being impacted by the ground changes, but I was interested to get the "in-ground" feeling on RM Even last season I heard grumblings, I wondered if thats been intensified with the results that have been produced?

I've always liked RM. In my mind he had one target last season and he achieved it. My concern has always been just how many goals we concede. From memory I think when I toted it up, no team had ever been promoted conceding the number of goals we did. I paused the TV last night after one of the B'mouth goals, cant remember which one, to look at the shape of the back line. It was comical how badly they were positioned. I think I said this after the 4 games in a row we lost at the start of the season, he needs to find a way to defend better. Pure and simple. Is that 4 times already this season we've let in 3 goals? I was hopeful that we had seen the seeds of a plan to being able to compete prior to last night, but that line up and performance were baffling. I voted no, but I dont think I could articulate a good argument for keeping him other than he's got credit with me for Wembley.

I thought he was excellent last night in a slightly deeper position.

Not seen him mentioned but Adebayo impressed me last season at Luton. 10 PL goals in that team isn't bad. Would certainly provide a good focal point too.

Being a permanent signing took me by surprise but fantastic news. This is a GK that would improve the majority of teams in the league, let alone a side who are fighting for survival. I've seen some re-writing of history about his ability today on X etc, but he is fantastic and is a huge coup for us.

I hope he can bring that to Saints. So many times on Saturday Arma made the out to in run off he ball and no-one attempted to find him. Like the sound of this signing.
