Given that we have increasing confidence of staying up, it looks like the opportunity to have the mother of all clear-outs in the summer. Most, but not all, really good servants who would be a great asset for teams lower down the pyramid - but lots of trimming to help create some room for two or three quality signings. Here's my starter for 10 - what do you think? Forecast Davis Richardson Butterfield Seabourne Martin Dixon Fox Chaplow Hammond Guly Forte Barnard Sharp Lee

How many points needed for "safety"?

Have to say I disagree. If you compare the bottom 4 when we last went down (WBA, Norwich and Palace) those sides were massively weaker than anything I've seen this year. Telfer, Jakobsen, Delap, Ormerod, etc would not hold a candle to our current team in my opinion -
Fair play to Artur - like many I was really unconvinced initialy but he has looked superb last three games. Commands his box, big guy who does not get pushed around and looks calm and confident. Lets hope he continues this form

Kamil Kosowski - and DM's legendary inability to pronounce his name!

go on - try and engage with the debate. It won't hurt! which bits are bullsh!t?

I do genuinely believe there is a route to Saints competing to regularly be a top 6 team over a ten year period but not in a simple "chuck wages at players" style a la Pompey. To be fair to NC he is addressing the infrastructure with nothing but the best at the academy, but as others have said an absolute must is to expand the stadium. Our attendances now, with the constraints of a 32500 capacity, show us about 12th. However I think we would regularly get crowds of over 40,000 when playing top half teams, and our catchment area exapands throughout Dorset, Wiltshire and most of Hampshire. Just look at the JPT final for a glimpse of what is out there. So if the stadium is firmly on the agenda I don't think its madness but it will take a decade

I've said on another thread that i would not have done this, and feel gutted for NA. However....................... ................proper fans will want to focus on supporting MP and the team - THEY HAVE NOT MADE THIS DECISION. If we turn St Mary's into a difficult and unpleasant place we will go down. Why do that? So let every one let off steam over the weekend but then get behind the team and the manager on monday night
-
I'm really gutted to hear about Nigel going - I've seen every one of our last five away games and its clear we were making good progress after what was I accept a naive start to the season. Nigel did a great job, will always be loved by Saints fans and should leave really proud and get a good job elsewhere. However what I would really ask people to step back and reflect on is their reaction on monday night and beyond. Its not about the chairman or manager - we will hopefully be here long after they go. There should be one objective only and thanks to support the new manager (its not his fault!) and the players who are representing our club. We didn't agree that Pardew should be sacked but things have gone well by everyone sticking together. So I would not be doing this is I were NC - but he isnt gonna change his mind now

Can't work out what they are saying re engineering work. Booked on 845am from King's Cross and National Rail Enquiries says hourly train from York on divert. It still doesn't say there is any issue with my train (albeit its a slightly longer journey than the others later in teh day) so should I be worried?

sorry lifted wrong quote! Davis (not willingly but we won't play Boruc and Gazza isn't fit ) Clyne Yoshida Fonte Shaw Morgan Cork Davis Gaston Puncheon J Rod
-
A good choice and I would not start with Lambert today but not because I think he is past it, rather that four games in 10 days is too much for nearly everyone and we will need his height at Stoke (where I'd also play Guly rather than Ramirez). So JayRod today with Ramirez in the hole
-
If fit, I'd go for 5 at the back away from home: push Fox and Clyne both forward at every chance and use Fonte (or Jos if playing against a Crouch or Carroll type), Moshida and Seabourne. Seabourne was looking excellent early on last season before he went and got the s!#t kicked out of him and I can't imagine him just alowing a ball to cross our six yard box.
-
Fox is good going forward, including set pieces. But he has never closed down a wide man and prevented a cross from coming in - he just does not think as a defender naturally does. We got a away with that in the championship when teams don't punish you.

Some massive over-reactions on this thread tonight. I am as disappointed as everyone else with second half but a number of unfair points in my opionion as follows: 1. Been as underwhelmed by JayRod as every one else up to now, but thought he worked his socks off first half and was a threat. He faded 2nd half as did Lambert - see below 2. Today is a case study as to why Nigel left Lambert on the bench at Man City - he isn'tfit enough to press the opposition's back four for more than an hour. Thats why he was take off to much derision - but we were being run all over from not being in Fulham's faces upfront 3. My biggest grievance is that we are now in mid-October and we still dont have a settled back 4. Injuries dont help, but truth is we only have 1 premiership quality defender and thats Clyne (albeit Fonte did well today). Massive priority for January - but that could be too late if we are not careful 4. Have a look at our next 6 league fixtures - reason to feel we can get at least a point and in many cases three from each game (Spurs looks tough though). So not a crisis - we just need to be competitive going into January window 5.Paulo's distribution and shot stopping looks firstclass. With more experience he could be a world beater - hope we stick with him

in every season overthe last 8 years, 86 points would always get you up

While I'm not usually of the "spend, spend, spend" club I do think that smashing our record fee on this guy could be very good business. Don't forget we have the Oxlade-Chamberlain money to spend, Hooper has a hugely impressive goal ration including Championship (with a team that struggled), and crucially as a young English player he will have significant on-selling value if we wish in a couple of years. Not suggesting we would want to sell him on, but merely that this plays a big part in determining value.
-
Very good summary I'd say - agree with Cork (and Hammond 2nd half excellent after a very poor first half). JWP, Hoskins and Stephens all looked promising but Doble looks unlikely to be good enough. Great turnout from us

A truly memorable day out - and a lively and fantastic atmosphere on the trains! Horrendous to see the brick-throwing incident (I believe it hit the guy's daughter who went understandably bezerk). However, these morons are a tiny minority - we had some great conversations with Plymouth fans beforehand and like us in recent times they are going through the mill.

For those who care about club finances etc - annual accounts published

Fully understand people's concerns, but right from the outset its obvious that ML was providing cash injections to fund the difference between income and (player) expenditure. The debt to equity piece would not necessarily be tax efficient for ML's family - its true that if the assets were sold then they could become effectively a creditor to a new owner. But, as has been pointed out, if they really had some devious intent (I don't believe that for one minute) they could always seperate the ground from the rest of the business etc. So I see nothing here at all to be worried about. However, unlike John Smith's bizarre rant, I think Steve has done nothing wrong here - in fact he has helped us learn more about the club we all love. Isn't that what the forum is here for? -

While people have highlighted his successful track record of two promotions and last year keeping the smallest club in the championship, pretty remarkable enough, one important thing has not been stressed. This is that each year he has had to sell his star players as well - Andy Keough and Billy Sharp who got the goals that promoted them 4 years ago were then immediately sold to Wolves and Sheff Utd. Then he signed Martin Paterson, who he was forced to sell to Burnley. Finally after keeping them up last year he the had to sell Hooper to Celtic - a thankless brief which makes the success incredible. Fully accept the pressures at Saints are more, but you can't question his right to get the job. Lets all get behind him - starting Wednesday

Either you have never seen Marcus before or are fibbing. I sit very close and can assure you he was not there
