I think the only mistake I have seen so far is the poor press management on the outstanding monies owed in transfers. It seemed to miss the point that most deals are done in instalments so was really a non-story but fed an impression that things were less stable than first thought and smacked of expectation management. So an own goal. However, that apart, I don't buy into the argument that they should have provided a running commentary on contractual negotiations with MP or Spurs. And if rumour of total package for RL being £9 million is true, then for someone who turn 33 next season and is a lifelong Liverpool fan it isn't stupidity to consider it and negotiate. I think all of this will turbo charge the recruitment of a new manager and I would be surprised if the new man is not in within the next two weeks to start to turn the tide

A sensible interview, and while gutted to lose MP there is huge over reaction on here. Suggest someone digs out the thread when NA was sacked and an unknown Argentinian was announced......

Where is your list? Don't be shy!

As others have said, hopefully MoPO stays. But if he goes then any of the following would have different qualities to bring: Moyes - great job with ok, but not great, resources over Everton and impossible job to take over Fergie's squad Poyet- despite being irritating at Brighton, did great job there and done similar at Sunderland. Plays quality football Benitez - loves managing in England, accept we may struggle to attract him. McLaren - great job at Middlesbrough, Derby and in Holland. Does not relying spending huge sums Howe - accept he is unproven at Premier League level, but who isn't before they take their first job? Could he honestly have done anything better so far in his career and still very young? I personally think Hoddle, yes still, Allardyce and Pulis are all in their different ways very good managers but all would be divisive of fan base. We want united club after what will I fear be an unsettling summer so would rule them out for this reason

Our system demands both full backs provide the width. As some have pointed out, dreadful quality of crossing from both wings today, marginally improved when Clyne came on. With no pace upfront given JayRod absence you simply have to get crosses in for Lambert and Gallagher and we couldn't do it. Didnt deserve to lose, but equally created about a quarter of the chances we did against Newcastle.

An excellent first impression, and great to see the fans on this forum actually giving him a chance, and more. Like others have said, lively to read KL's words. I sit not far from her on match days, and her face is a picture when the fans sing for her dad. I think things like this have made a massive impact on her.

Last week I mentioned how lambert was crying out for a rest. The issue is we are now paying a price, at the end of a season full of high tempo pressing football, for only having two frontline strikers. The irony is that both him and JayRod who both look shattered are now off on international duty. We need a minimum of 2 strikers, probably 3 in the summer so that in August there are 2 good striking options on the bench each game and can rotate around busy Xmas period etc

I thought he was excellent, as he was beginning to look before that injury at Sunderland. Be surprised if he does not start against Liverpool possibly for Lambert

Reading the first page of this thread is more depressing than shelling out cash and watching a defeat. Noticeable that the posts have got progressively more sensible. My thoughts are: 1. There cannot be much fundamentally with an attacking performance that creates 25 shots. Clearly we had one of those days when we wasted many of them and did not make Adrian work. No one at Fulham or Cardiff would have said we can't score goals and on another day we could have banged in 5. 2. Lambert has been a hero and is still worth place in the squad but he looks terribly jaded. Massively ironic that we chose NOT to rest him against Sunderland, but rest other younger and fitter players. He needs a rest as most 32 year olds in top flight football do. 3. Quite apart from the hoof ball which is awful, Wet Spam do actually pose different threats. They are only Premier side that plays two genuine wingers, and they get more aerial threat in than most from wide positions. We struggled to cope with Cole today, as limited as he is, and should not have allowed the space and time for the cross on the third one. Their wingers kept our full backs occupied in the first half- note how much more Luke came into the game after Jarvis went off. Fair play to Big Sam. 4. Lovren back fit makes a difference, as in my opinion does Clyne. Chambers is promising but much more limited going forward at present. As for all of the moaning about MoPO, it's embarrassing.

The big issues here are: 1. Does KL continue to fund investment 2. Does MP resign in protest. If yes to funding, and no to MP resigning it may prove storm in teacup. Although people have made snide remarks, this is where club structure with Les Reed as Director of Football really comes into its own. He has the noise and the contacts. NC did brilliant job but previously knew nothing about football -
At present, and in the spirit of not writing someone off too soon, he isn't sharp enough or resilient enough, to play Premier League football. That's also true of Gaston. You can have loads of talent, but you need to match that with the right attitude. The MoPo style does not leave room for passengers. So lets hope he gets up with it quickly, or else it may be a case of talented player, but not right for us in this team
-
they will release the next set of TV games over the next month or so - and so it is a big risk to book trains at present I think
-
I personally would be delighted with us climbing one place each season over the next 5 years - not sure that type of slow progress will please NC but to my mind it would be sustainable success and if accompanied by stadium expansion would be in our long-term interests. If you buy-in to the fact that we will be mid-table, as per my prediction, then we should be prepared for it appearing at one point during the season that we are in a relegation battle. Its kind of unavoidable unless you are a top half team that at some point a loss of form sees you looking over the shoulder. This will be the key point for us - trust NC will back MP when this happens and keep the stability there.

Jos Hooiveld part of the PL 2012/13 Most Ineffective XI
Forester replied to old_southy's topic in The Saints
Far, far better than he was at the beginning of the season and has become part of a reliable back four. The stats since Xmas are pretty good defensively. To rate it on own goals is a bit daft -
. Yep! And bearing in mind who was the only keeper who saved a MLT penalty......!
-
surprised no one has mentioned Sheff wed away under Burley. Bale played like a genius pouring forward from left back. Saints winning 3-2 in stoppage time. Sheff Wed get a corner - and MARK CROSSLEY scores!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Not a deviation at all - you are absolutely right. MP is undoubtedly a very shrewd tactician and what I like, despite a disappointing (and undeserved) result at Spurs is that he fixes problems. If you watch that West Brom game again, you will see Jos being sucked into the hole between defence and midfield and this way out of position for the through ball. This was also our problem early on in the season when we just could not cope with the ball being pinged around our centre backs. I thought our defence was superb at Spurs and this article highlights a key reason why. Lastly, as a huge Rickie fan, I do feel he has tired recently and we should consider more frequently bringing him off the bench a la Man City, Chelsea more often away from home. His fitness understandably isn't as high as you would want for a striker playing the way that this tactical approach demands. we need to strengthen in that area in the summer big time
-
I understand the sentiment here, but reality is that IF we are serious about pushing on to top half or better we need 2 Premier League quality options per position. And Richardson and Fox don't fit the bill. So I'd expect/hope for some signings this summer in positions where we don't have a crisis, but we absolutely need competition for places. And one of those is Lambert, an absolute legend, but not irreplaceable as he moves through his 30s....

Step-by-step guide to survival before kick off on May 19th

very well put -
Clearly all games are crucial, but I think there are two really big ones - yes its Wigan v Swansea (which I think they will get either 1 or 3 points). But the other key game for me is Villa v Chelsea next Saturday. Reason being that if that one goes to Chelsea, who are clearly still going for Champions League, it means that one more point for Saints will almost certainly be enough. That Villa v Wigan game really helps us, and you would have to budget that Wigan would need to not only beat Swansea but ALSO Arsenal for a draw between Villa and Wigan to send us down. So for me its one point needed unless Villa get something against Chelsea.
-
in this thread I can't see anyone mention the intended new capacity - how many would it hold?
-
I have us finishing on 40 points (that included a correct forecast of a draw against Norwich) and I'm convinced that will be enough. However......I fear we will only get one point from these next two home games. Liverpool look in absolute prime form which is sods law. If I'm right, I just hope everyone sticks together because as others have identified the fixtures then get a lot better. The preachers of doom will be trotting out anti-MoPo stats about only one win in lots, so it won't be easy to keep things positive. But we absolutely must!

very fair and accurate
