  1. Very interesting article in the Guardian today: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/sep/18/premierleague
  2. Due to unregulated financial sector in the US and the UK - a hangover from the Regan / Thatcher era Due, in the main to short selling Global market forces the other two - knock effects of all the above. I don't deny things are bad but my point was that a lot of this has been caused by the 'system'. Yes, something's going on, but it's been made a whole lot worse by hysterical reporting - a self-fulfilling prophecy really.
  3. Didn't a woman on the Isle of Wight die recently from eating mushrooms?
  4. I wish people would stop talking us into a crisis that isn't there. I don't mean people on here - I mean the press mainly. Bloody short sellers and hedge fund traders should be shot IMO
  5. That's their biggest problem IMO. A lot of what they say appeals to a long-time leftie like me but the problem is they appear to change their tune depending on current events - bandwagoners of the highest order. I remember in years gone by, when I was a very active member of Eastleigh Labour Party, how one LD councillor would say one thing and another LD would spout opposite opinions at the hustings. If I knew where they stood on every issue I might consider voting for them (added bonus - I'd be voting against one D. Chameleon in my constituency). At least I recognise and reject the basic 'principles' of the Tories - look after the rich and sod the rest. With the Libs I'm not so sure.
  6. My forecast was right
  7. My forecast was right then
  8. I forecast 2 - 2. I hope I'm wrong
  9. Is this site slow tonight or are we all just speechless because we're ahead? Edit - we're not
  10. You are kidding, right? I have never known a bunch of people work so hard and so long as those I worked with in the NHS. Working 18 or 19 hours a day to meet a project deadline was the norm, I promise you. I hope everything works out OK for your cousin BTW.
  11. Sitting on the fence as ever: 2 - 2
  12. The thing that really ******es me off about all this is that the people who really do earn top dollar do so in the form of bonuses and perks which they manage not to pay tax on (hedge funds for example). So not only does an industry that, in the past, has baulked against regulation from governments now come cap in hand for governmental support but the people driving the requests for support pay very little tax to said governments in the first place! Sod the man in the street, eh
  13. BTF in making a mistake shocker... (and being too idle to Google it)
  14. I would
  15. I know I'll get lynched but...... The MLT school of fitness, diet and sprinting?
  16. He only deals in vitriol and sarcasm, I'm afraid.
  17. And the sweet little cricket ground nearby Oh and I nearly forgot the quaint Floating Bridge (how could I forget that - venue for many an assignation in my murky past lol)
  18. I wonder if any of you have been watching the 3 parter (that finished last night) on ITV and starring Kevin Whatley (sp?). It was called 'The Children' and, in a nutshell, it was about a 9 year old girl who falsely accused her step-brother of abuse. She was a disturbed little girl who was jealous (and had hurt) her baby step-sister. Her step-brother had done no wrong. It examined the disastrous effects her accusations had, not just on her step-brother, but on all members of her extended family. She was pushed in anger and fell through a window and died. The guilty party was, in fact her father's partner who was the mother of the baby she'd hurt and who was saw through the child's falsehoods. The story line was very sad - and very apt in the light of these discussions.
  19. Oh noes! Not another takeover announcement on a Friday FFS
  20. Me too, Alf - a night that will stay in my memory for ever more.
  21. How did 'Dicko' get through the filter?
  22. LOL we're all cracking up at Ashley reckoning he wants £300m for NU, thinking that's way over the odds. Poopey is just a zit on the arse of football in comparison.
  23. When I was a little girl, a paedophile lived about half a mile down the road. He used to offer children sweets. I was never told he was a paedophile - I was told he had fleas. That was enough to keep me and my friends well away from him. I don't think there's any more paedophilia now than there was then - it's just more widely publicised. And remember this - most child abuse is carried out by family members, sadly.
  24. For all the reasons I said! If the Premier League goes belly up and, for example, football clubs lose their attendances and Sky loses its customers and can't pay mega bucks to Premier clubs and shirt sponsors go bust then this will trickle down to all levels. I like to look on the dark side (RIP Richard Wright) so that I'm pleasantly surprised if things turn out not so bad
  25. I get it
