  1. This is a useful illustration of how things are progressing in the UK http://www.theguardian.com/environment/interactive/2011/oct/05/greenometer-interactive-greenest-government?CMP=fb_gu
  2. Don't know if anyone else spotted this on the Guardian website: http://www.theguardian.com/football/video/2013/nov/19/the-secret-footballer-first-tv-interview-video?CMP=fb_gu
  3. Fond memories of that place
  4. If he buys her an iron for her birthday, he'll need a new wife!
  5. The splendid irony is that Dave has removed his speech wherein he said how much he valued the power of the internet in holding politicians to account. Surely not the same Dave that now seeks to castrate some of the powers of the internet and, thereby, the powers of such sites as 38 Degrees that do such a good job of challenging policies.
  6. 10 years younger than my actual age! Phew
  7. Here's someone else's view on (the lack of) democracy today http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/nov/11/business-rules-lobbying-corporate-interests?CMP=fb_gu

  11. Feeds from the Guardian and Another Angry Voice to my Facebook account. Simple really - you should try it sometime. Cynical and bitter? Or an alternative take on current issues?
  12. I loved going there with my dad when I was a little girl. Always the Milton Road end.
  13. Look what I've just found whilst looking for something else http://www.labc.uk.com/technical-faqs Might be helpful?
  14. And here is another view on the same topic http://anotherangryvoice.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/the-desecration-of-poppy.html
  15. I think one of the points he was making was that some people wear the poppy for motives other than remembering our war dead. He commented on media presenters as an example. I often have a picture in my mind where there is a box of poppies just out of shot of the TV cameras, ready to pinned on whoever is about to appear. I am not knocking people who wear the poppy for very genuine reasons BTW.
  16. Thank you for correcting the thread title
  17. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/nov/08/poppy-last-time-remembrance-harry-leslie-smith?CMP=fb_gu Does he have a valid point?

  21. I can see who the major shareholders are (Invesco for one) but when you look a the company's subsidiaries you can see how complicated it would be to drill down into each one to see who 'owns' them. Knowing how many MPs have fingers in other pies, I wonder if BAE exercises undue influence with the powers that be. Reading BAE's Wiki page, the company seems to have been involved in a number of questionable issues - I remember the bunce allegations a few years ago.
  22. Series of historical photos that have been 'colorized' (sic) http://imgur.com/a/YiOLx Incredible how up to date they look!
  23. We live in a hard water area too. Six months after we moved into our (brand new) house, we were having problems with our hot water flow. It turned out that an inhibitor had been fitted to the pipework to filter out all the cack and this inhibitor was completely gummed up with said cack. This meant the cold supply couldn't get through to the boiler. The inhibitor was replaced and it's all fine now. But obviously it's going to be a recurring problem but cheaper to replace that than to have the boiler fur up I suppose.
  24. BG always say this - they said it to us when our last house was less than 10 years old! My daughter has just had her (very old) boiler replaced by a plumber they know and respect. I don't remember the cost, although it was a lot cheaper than BG, but he said that spares are nearly always available way beyond 10-15 years and that, as has been said, BG are just touting for new business.
