His pathetic 'leftfield' appointments are all about him trying to ape the fluky success of Brentford in a bid to make him out to be some kind of contrarian genius. Instead we have had some of the worst managerial appointments in the history of Southampton FC, which has meant we have lurched from playing style to playing style, personality to personality, leaving all the players just confused. Armstrong has just run around a bit, being ineffectual, for most of this season. It’s as if he knows he is not Prem standard, but can capitalise in the Champ where running around a bit bears fruit. Best half of the season by miles. So nice to see pace and threat up front, not Armstrong. Dibling Fermandes and Aribo excellent. Great to watch. Whatever happens next, it feels like the manager is making his statement

Just been watching the build up with the players skulking around on the pitch in little groups and a few of them staring at their phones on their own, headphones on (tall Paul I’m looking at you). Terrible body language. Walker Peters sheepishly saying they were there to win, to camera, not wholly convincingly. I fear a drubbing. But at least we haven’t got to watch Armstrong running round aimlessly like a rabbit in a big field.
