I think I remember that - last minute winner by Millwall wasn't it? As for the Sky "curse", I agree it used to a bit a of a myth in the past. But if you check our TV record last season I think it was something like played 8, lost 8.

Thanks - I'm not going mad :-) I wonder whatever happened to Pat Earles.

Does anyone else (who is old enough like me) remember us playing a friendly against Hearts just after winning the FA Cup Final in 76. Most people remember the Channon testimonial on the Monday evening but I'm sure we also played against Hearts on the following Saturday. I have no idea why a friendly like this was played post-season. I seem to remember it being billed as a English vs Scottish cup winners game. I went along early thinking the Dell would be packed like the Channon game but in fact it was a bit of an anti-climax with not many there. Sad as I am, I even remember the score - we lost 3-2 after being 2-0 up. Am I going mad or does anyone else remember this?

I'm just off for a cup of tea. I hope to see a couple of interesting posts by the time I get back.

Wouldn't surprise me after he scored 2 against them at SMS.
-
Would that be WWGS ?

To be fair, the horses had been giving them some stick during the game - making gestures with their hooves and taunting them with songs about floor cleaner and so on.

A poster on the Echo page points out that Gillico rhymes with Lowe. That's good enough proof for me.
-
Spot on! But as we know, a few inconvenient facts are rarely enough to stop a good rumour.
-
I know the Echo gets a lot of criticism on here but I did not see any article that said Falkia did not have the money. They merely reported some verifiable facts about where he lives and the turnover of his company - something that rightly raised some questions about his involvement. They also published Fry's statement that he was satisfied that the money was there. So I cannot see what the lawyers plan to "deal with" exactly. Trying to threaten the press for printing some negative (but factual) information does not feel me with confidence about this guy (and no, I don't have any connection with the Echo).

Agree on both points. Online booking was the main reason I renewed my membership each year, but like you I found I could still log in and book even when it had temporarily expired. Let's hope it remains like that - or that they open it up for everyone.

I admire the ideas on here but I can't help feeling it will be something like: Year 1: Struggle with -10 points, new manager, new players, low crowds, other teams kicking us about. Survive relegation to League 2 by the skin of our teeths. Year 2: A mediocre start, low mid-table, even lower crowds, fans call for manager to be sacked. Manager eventually leaves, new manager brings modest improvement. Finish 9th. Year 3: More mid-table mediocrity. More fan discontentment. A couple of new players in January help a bit and we push for the play-offs but just miss out on the final day. Year 4: Starting to do a bit better. Spend most of the season in the top 6 but miss out on automatic promotion. Lose the play-off final at Wembley on a penalty shoot-out. Year 5: Everyone assumes this will be our year but a complacency leads to another poor start. Manager is sacked ... and so on.

Didn't we play Celtic, West Ham and Stoke last pre-season. A lot of good that did us.

I don't think there is any prize money based on league position outside the Premiership. It does seem to be another loophole if a team more than 10 points above the relagation zone can just go into admin near the end of the season and get no effective punishment.
-
How would you know that? :-)
-
So how did you do that? I tried logging in with that number but it wants a password. I can log in with my own member details but how do I link the purchase to this scheme?

Before this season I would have agreed with you, but from memory the televised games this season have been: Blackpool (H), QPR (A), Bristol City (H), Coventry (A), Palace (A), Man U (Cup - H), Wolves (A) A record of played 7, lost 7 - pretty woeful even by the standards of this season.
-
You're right about the odds - 6/4 ON represents a 60% chance. You can't simply treat it as a fraction - otherwise the shorter the odds, the lower the probability would be (eg 10 to 1 ON would mean only a 10% chance).

I did use to twitter site to get updates and thanks to whoever it was that set it up and wrote the reports. I would have liked slightly more frequent updates but I can understand that it's not easy to both watch the game and type at the same time. Also it sounds like there was not a great deal to report last night anyway. Like others have said, I prefer the banter of the match thread (even though I don't generally post) - but twitter will be a useful addition when the main server is overloaded.
-
I added 10/10 (ie 1). 11/10 + 10/10 = 21/10. The probability is therefore 10/21. Here endeth the maths lesson.
-
To turn odds into probability you add 1 and then invert it. So 11/10 is a probability of 10/21 - or 47.6%

I've been going since the late 60's - just after the 1st promotion to Division 1. In my first game we beat WBA 4-0 with the scorers being Chivers(2), Davies and Paine. My second game was the 1-5 defeat to Leicester when Peter Shilton scored against us. I suppose those 2 games just about sums up what it's been like supporting Saints over the years.

I agree. I think the captain needs to be in the thick of it, geeing the players up, giving them a bollocking when they mis-hit passes and cooling things down with the ref if someone's in danger of a yellow/red card. Nothing against KD who's had a great season but I think someone else should be captain - not sure who though.
-
From their website it looks like Újpest also played Wolves on Tuesday. I imagine they are just playing a few friendlies during their mid-season break before their league resumes. I don't think we should read too much into this.

It's all part of Rupert's plan to get promotion to the Premiership without all that tedious business of having to win games: - Get all of our decent players to Stoke directly or indirectly. - Asset-strip the current club until it folds. - Use the money accumulated to buy up Stoke. - Announce that Stoke City are being renamed as Southampton FC and all future games will be played at St Mary's Genius!
