It's not the dogshite bit I disagree with, it's the "worldbeater" bit. He is dogshite compared to the standard of the rest of our back 4 (all top 8 quality). But there are levels. Dogshite compared to Burn, which is the context of the quote, is not the same as being benched for Hoedt, arguably the worst CB we've seen in this prem era.
-
Salisu was starting for us at 20, Bednarek was benched for Hoedt at 22. He was still young, granted, but basically all his career growth was under Ralph and before that he wasn't particularly highly thought of at all.
-
I'm "all over the place" because you put words in my mouth I never said. I never said he is "a worldbeater", he is an ok lower midtable prem CB, would be fine at a team around 15-17th. We should want better. He was benched behind Hoedt for a team almost relegated. Definite improvement. I dunno why Moi wasn't played December to June, maybe Ralph felt he had better options.
-
1) Never thought that, but Ralph improved him more than playing in a substandard league did 2) Absolutely. Before Ralph turned up he was benched for Hoedt having been signed for £4m from the polish league. He's now a full international, Prem regular, and linked with moves to teams like Napoli. It's basically impossible not to think Ralph improved him if you know what he was like pre-Ralph. Here is a graph of his market value from Transfermarkt with a beautifully drawn arrow pointing to when Ralph took over:
-
Wood has put up double digit hauls in the league for 4 years. It isn't Howe that unlocked him.
-
That's 6 games though, what about the proceeding 6 where Adams scored 3 and got one assist and Broja got one goal?
-
In that quoted time Adams has scored 3 times, has 2 assists and was up for Premier league player of the month, which Broja got 1 goal. So no.
-
Yet it just so happened to occur after the biggest Jan spend in europe. And not even gradually, they went from winning 1 in 3 months to going unbeaten for like 7 games. Coincidence I guess.
-
Clearly doesn't suit Broja's style that significantly, given he has 1 league goal in the last 4 months.
-
Both can be true. It was Trippiers first game and he hadn't bedded in yet. After he did he was very successful and scored the winner in the Villa game, scored in the Everton game and was excellent in their win at Leeds.
-
Nope Wood has an xG on the season of 7.73 to Broja's 5.54. Wood is actually underperforming his xG this season for the first time in 3 years which is why he is down on 5 when he should be up around 8 goals. Has been a bit unlucky.
-
I actually have never played football manager. I just know a support striker makes goals as well as scoring them, it's where the "support" bit comes from, and Wood does not at all do that. He's a goal scorer.
-
Not sure the relevance of that to Martinez but after he left Everton they had three more seasons in the top half. They only started struggling when FFP caught up.
-
No he absolutely would not. He has four back to back double digit goal scoring seasons before this one but he averages about 1.2 assists a season. He is a finisher, he is absolutely not a support striker. Burnley never played with a support striker, they have dual targetmen and traditional wingers to hit them with crosses and cutbacks.
-
by "your boys" do you mean southampton? Are they not your boys too? And he was managing Everton, their spending power dwarfed us. Before the two 11th places Everton hadn't finished outside the top half for 8 years. When Ralph came in we were on the verge of relegation.
-
No one player is the reason. I'll answer again. Wood, Trippier, Bruno, Burn, and Targett have all between them improved newcastle. You isolate them one by one and say "oh they only did this, they only did that" but as a group Trippier earned them 6-9 points when he was fit, Bruno scored a key goal against us and has had good games, Wood has as double the goals of a striker you seem to really rate since he came in so clearly can't be doing too much wrong, Burn has been a massive upgrade at CB and would walk into our team and Targett while not good enough for us is a huge improvement over what they had. If the spending didn't make a difference why did their form just so happen to pick up at the end of Jan when Howe has already been there almost 3 months? Especially when immediately before the signings they were losing to the likes of Cambridge united.
-
He's one behind, so pretty close tbh.
-
How did he do after that?
-
Well you rate Broja so surely Wood who has the same output you should also rate, right?
-
It's relevant because you said Wood wouldn't make our team as he's only scored 2 goals since Jan in the league. As if Broja is outperforming that.
-
How many goals has Broja scored in that time in the league?
-
What has De Boer acheived? Aside from the worst prem record of all time and a decent display in the dutch league. Southgate is a crap manager who happens to be up against other crap managers as the vast majority of international managers at the last euros were wank. International football doesn't have the same appeal. Martinez scraped an FA cup while also being relegated. Bravo. Rather a manager who can get their team to 2nd in the top league than one who gets a lucky FA cup draw and finishes 18th. He beat Bournemouth, Macklesfield, Huddersfield, Everton and Milwall before a flukey win in the final. Also got relegated. He then went to Everton and proved beyond any doubt he was a crap manager.
-
Burn and Wood would walk into our side right now. Bednarek is dogshite and Burn has been great. Wood isn't exactly a goal machine but he's outscored Broja since joining Newcastle in significantly fewer minutes.
-
Martinez is also a crap manager, international management just doesn't hold the prestige it used to. Netherlands were managed by De Boer the same tournament. We have Southgate.
-
Ralph has managed in the CL and finished 2nd in a major league, behave. Far more impressive than winning games in the lower leagues with a lot of funding. He didn't turn round Newcastle, they were just as shit from November to near the end of January. Between him taking over on the 8th of November and the 22nd of Jan he won 1 game, including notable losses to Cambridge united, a 4-0 battering by an at the time massively out of form Leicester, and a draw at Norwich. They spend a load of money and after that start winning. Surprise surprise.
