A dreadful performance and there had been signs it was coming. The inability to hold a lead has been really frustrating, and this is down to inept defenders and at times an overly exposed defensive line. I do think that RM will get us plenty of wins and we will be up at the top end challenging for promotion but along the way there will be some really dreadful performances. It is still early days with RM as our manager, and I think he's done a good job so far in creating a new style of football and a better atmosphere amongst the players. Hopefully, he can bed in the new players and start to rectify the huge gaps in defence.

Would love to have Fonte back, he's still playing at a high level at Lille and looks in great shape. Brings a shed load of experience both in the championship and as a winner. Last season we were crying out for an experienced leader at the back, especially with such a young goalkeeper, we needed an experienced leader in there. It could also be the case of training to eventually move into a coaching/managerial role here.

I hadn’t considered OGS, I think he’s a realistic and potentially decent shout. I’d worry about his ability to build a team with a strong mentality, as his time at United that appeared to be his and the team’s biggest flaw. We all know that our current squad‘s back bone is about as solid as a paper straw. In a dream world we’d get Potter but can’t see him stepping down to the championship. Same with Rodgers, I can’t see that happening but think he would do a good job.

Positive aspects of being in the Championship
AngusHyd replied to east-stand-nic's topic in The Saints
I’m looking forward to having a proper chance in games. Every week we should know that we have a good chance of winning. The quality of football in the championship is pretty good these days, it’s not the rough league it once was. I dream of us having a season like Burnley, who went down in a similar state to us. If we can bring in a good manager who likes working with youngsters, we could end up having a cracking season. The club needs a refresh anyway, we’ve been stagnant for several seasons. -
Am I watching the same game as Selles?! At what point with 10 minutes until your last chance at not being relegated is gone do you swap from playing a bloody back 5 and throw the kitchen sink at it. Absolute joke, I can’t stand watching us play atm. Relegation and sacking Selles can’t come quick enough. Half the squad can follow him out as well, they are gutless and useless.

Did well both times then Bazunu. Hopefully starting to progress!

A long shot but I’d take Rafa Benitez in a heartbeat. Although in a miraculous world, Pochettino

Bree has had a fantastic second half, fair play to the lad. -

Lavia has been class since coming on, has settled the whole midfield down. -
He definitely seems to not enjoy playing, although that might have something to do with playing right back. If that is the case he either needs to accept the fact that he’s not good enough to play CM at premier league level and drop down or try and find enjoyment playing RB. I can understand why the manager played him though, can’t risk KWP getting injured especially with the big away game at Newcastle on Tuesday. We need KWP to be fresh as possible. Hopefully Jones will play Perraud LB as he’s earned a start with todays performance. I’d be a lot more comfortable with Perraud ABK Salisu KWP as our back four than anything with AMN and Lyanco in it!

Not sure if he’s been mentioned but Antonio is open to leaving West Ham in search of game time. He’d be a short term option but should be pretty cheap. He’s got a good goal scoring record and has the physical attributes that should appeal to Jones. I’d happily get him in and another young prospect if we have the money to go alongside.

Southampton 0-1 Newcastle League Cup Semi Final 1st Leg

Che Adams straight away showing why he isn’t a natural goal scorer. Adam Armstrong in a decent position to cross and instead of making a run towards the six yard box he makes a run to the outside of him. -
A tricky one to review. Felt like we played better but how many times have we said that whilst under Ralph? I think it is clear as day that we need a ruthless goal scorer. The game should have been out of Fulham’s reach if we finished our chances. Edozie once again showed that he is a supreme talent, and is one who will win us games. Still very raw but there is a lot talent to be polished. JWP goal aside had a better more influential performance, nonetheless we need to see a lot more going forward still. Not sure about our choice of defence, I think when fully fit we have a better defensive line than when we play Lyanco. I still believe he’s better suited to midfield, just doesn’t have the discipline for CB. I think we need Lavia fit and to sign another midfielder to add strength in depth, in the middle of the park we are being bossed far too much. We are such a frustrating side, we at times look okay. However, I don’t think our players have any resilience at all. So often in the last few years they have bottled it even after decent performances. Our best period of results was when there were no fans in the stadium, and the players had a lot less pressure on them. I really hope Jones can turn them around and build a bit of grit but I am not that hopeful. At least in the championship we may win some games though!

So many dreadful performances out there, near on impossible to pick any individual players out. Midfield have been awful, can’t pass, tackle or break up play. Defence weak and all over the place. Bazunu, the less said the better fml. Edozie the only bright spark in the side and we need to be getting the ball to him constantly. Not sure what Jones does to sort out this crap although Diallo (who should have tracked Lallana for the first goal) off for AMN, Djenepo for Stuart Armstrong might sure up the midfield a bit. Should at least make it harder for them to pass it around the middle of the park.
-
I think he’s been better in his performances so far this season. Last season it almost felt he was trying too hard, likely as a result to prove himself to the manager. I definitely think there is a decent player in him and he can contribute to our team. Similar to David Luiz I think he could switch to DM and flourish. I’d like use to go to a diamond and have Lyanco used as DM, Lavia and JWP CMs and then Aribo as a CAM. Ideally with a new striker to go alongside Che

Agreed, we haven’t just rolled over. Lavia has grown into the game and if they had an average keeper instead of a world class one we might be drawing this. Jones is really vocal on the sidelines and his substitutions have made an effect, which Ralph was seemingly incapable of doing!
-
Aribo has been so frustrating so far, clearly a player with talent but my god he seems outrageously lazy at times. He jogs around a lot and seems to be a fair bit off the pace. Hopefully Jones can get him going and find the right position in the side as well.

Do you want Nathan Jones to Manage Southampton Football Club?
AngusHyd replied to Rivers's topic in The Saints
I'm starting to get on board with Jones as our manager. There is still the concern of lack of premiership management, however, there is only one way to gain that and it might be the springboard he needs to really flourish as a manager. The worry about his time at Stoke is understandable but I am hoping that it is similar to Eddie Howe's time at Burnley where it just wasn't the right match. Eddie Howe has gone on to prove himself as an incredible manager at both Bournemouth and recently Newcastle. Let's hope that Jones shall do the same with us. I like the sound of his aggressive pressing style and feel that our best football under Hassenhuttl was when he was employing the aggressive press. I think we're quite lucky that the world cup is now, gives the team a chance for a full reset and for Jones to have a good preseason with them and to install his tactics. Then the board need to back him in January, get a decent striker in and I think alongside that a playmaking midfielder hopefully someone who is a bit older and experienced. The policy of youth is a great one but we need some experience in the squad, especially when things aren't going our way. -
I have sympathy for Bazunu. He's clearly a talented goalkeeper but really has been thrown in at the deep end. He has a disorganised defence in front of him which also has very little protection from anywhere across the midfield. However, there were definitely times at the weekend he should have done better, especially the third goal, where he should have narrowed the angles by coming out more. If he was 3-4 yards closer to Willock, the only option would have been to try and lob him which at full pace would have been an incredibly difficult finish. Instead, he stayed too deep which allowed Willock to just toe poke it into the corner. I'd also like to see him punch more from corners rather than trying to catch everything, clear the danger.
-
At what point do we swap who is taking corners to mix it up a little? That or at least JWP could try a different type of delivery rather than the same old low ball near post.
-
Armstrong has shown good tracking back in my eyes. Put in a great shift a couple of times in last 5 minutes to slow down counter attacks.
-
For fitness I imagine and to play as many players as possible.
-
Romeo has looked solid at DM; happy to pick the ball up in relatively tight spaces, moves it on quickly and seems accurate with his passing. I’d like to see Aribo run with the ball a bit more and come deeper to pick it up but early days in a preseason friendly. Can’t expect too much! And a cracking save by our hopefully new number 1, already fills me with more confidence. Djenepo still looks poor to me but might be my bias against him now!

I've come to the conclusion it is time for Ralph to go. I think he has done a good job with players at his disposal but I also feel he might have taken us as far as he can. The club feels like it is due a fresh start and that includes the manager. We need a wholesale change in the playing squad, players like Redmond, Bednarek, McCarthy, Diallo, Walcott, Long, Djenepo, Valery and Elyounoussi can all be sold. We desperately need a new spine and I'd argue a new style of football/formation. At the moment we are a very predictable side to play and show so little creativity. If we have sustained possession, it feels highly unlikely that we will break a team down. More often than not our goals are either through a JWP set piece or a mistake from the opposition. Positives from the Liverpool game... I thought Lyanco looked decent, that's about it.
-
Bednerak has been dreadful in this game. Constantly stepping out of position and being second to the ball. Great finish by Armstrong shame it was offside but needs to find himself in that position more often, just peeling off the defenders shoulder.
