Saints v Spurs (FA Cup) Match & Reactions Thread

Is that correct? -
I have a suspicion Armstrong will be rested, I don't think his recovery time is sufficient to allow him to play 2 games in 3 days, going by past line-ups. Absolutely cracking player, but sports science is incredibly sophisticated these days and each player is micro-managed, thus if the boffins say he needs a rest, so be it.

Whoa, Nelly. Very much a game of 3/4 quarters (Ok, the first quarter belonged to Wolves). Wolves got out of the blocks very quickly, but, after the first 15 minutes without reward, were a little lost. Southampton blew them away in the remaining minutes up to half-time; no weak links. In the second half, Wolves were fired up to be at their very best; big and strong in defence, fast and dangerous in attack (in the case of Traore, all of the above). Pound-for-pound, Wolves are simply far better than Saints. If Traore develops a football brain, he will play for the best team in the world. I don't believe Saints had a particularly bad game; Redmond was mild-gash, as usual. Ings had a bad day at the office. Otherwise all good, including JWP and PEH. What could RH have done, in reality? There was no-one with pace on the bench to annul Traore (sorry, Romeu!), and substituting offensive threat risked defeat by more. Sometimes one has to accept that the better man won; Wolves are an excellent proposition. (

He was one of the players of the tournament at the last World Cup!
-
Yes, he was the missing piece of the jigsaw. Fantastic player in attack and he has even managed to add defending to his game. Fitness allowing, he should be one of the first names on the team-sheet.

But, but, but...

One season shanker.

They certainly had. In fact, most of the Spurs team looked disinterested from the first whistle. Eriksen, in particular, was a disgrace; mooching about just in front of the central defenders most of the time, reluctantly trotting up to take the set-pieces. I know he wants to leave, but he could at least pretend to play football for as long as he remains at the club. Good for Saints though... Mourinho is not the manager to sort out that squad; doubtless he will start throwing players under the bus to deflect criticism of himself, but he is not the disciplinarian they need. With Arsenal and Manchester United in similar disarray (and even Manchester City are showing faint signs of discontent with Guardiola) and Chelsea inconsistent (albeit enjoyable to watch), this is another season where unfancied teams could break the top 4. Liverpool have the title already and I think Leicester will stay the course (unless someone snaps Vardy's leg - what a shame that would be...), but European football is within reach for a team that dares.

Cedric was immense today.

Despite the fact that they won the Champions' League in May and have just been crowned World Club Champions?

As well as Armstrong (who I have been touting all season) mention should go to McCarthy. It is no coincidence that Saints' performances have been much more assured since he replaced Gunn. The big man commands his area, positions himself well and exudes confidence, which feeds in to the defenders. He is agile for his size, too. Fair enough, he didn't have much to do today, but his ongoing contribution should be recognised.

Great to see Armstrong getting game-time. Proper player who instinctively looks to get the ball forward.
-
I'd be delighted with a draw!

Well done you. The hat-trick of badness that is traffic, weather and late kick-off, plus Amazon showing the game, have seen me cry off tonight. Build-up on Amazon is streaming perfectly for me thus far, they really seem to be throwing the kitchen sink at this. Sky and BT should be very afraid. Glad I no longer hold shares in the latter...

I said at the time that, when Puel was asked to change his style of play, he refused on the grounds that it was impossible to do better with the squad of players he had inherited. Smart guy.
-
Jesus, look at the state of our goal difference compared to our relegation rivals! Effectively, that point could be decisive...
-
Armstrong is a good player, as long as his role is to attack, not defend. Not sure about Obafemi.

I have been saying this for some time, Reinhard!

I think we have a winner. -
McCarthy Valery Bednarek/Stephens Yoshida/Vestergaard Hojbjerg Romeu Danso Boufal Armstrong Djenepo Ings Armstrong is the player to drive the ball forward. Danso, whilst we haven't seen enough of him to decide on his footballing skills, is quick, a physical unit and has a killer throw-in. Hojbjerg is a good footballer but, at present at least, is not the midfield general; he makes a reasonable fist of left-back and, crucially, displaces the disgrace that is Ryan Bertrand 2018-19. Cedric should never wear a Saints shirt again; if Valery has another mare, put Stephens at right-back. Adams can come in for Ings at some point. Hopefully a goal will set him on his way. Bo!!ocks to Redmond and Ward-Prowse, last season was a long time ago. Stop p!ssing about with formations and play 4-2-3-1, the players aren't cut out for any other system.

Having struggled to read that, I am not sure that English is your first language either!

Please, no!

Vestergaard's distribution can be pretty good; granted, he is not VVD, but he can certainly spray a long pass. He is also unafraid to take the ball upfield himself. I suspect it is these characteristics that see him getting more game time than many here would like.
