10 goals? Where do you expect us to find such a player? Here is a list of all the players to have scored doubles figures in all competitions last season for Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético, Juventus and Bayern: Suárez - 59 Ronaldo - 51 Lewandowski - 42 Messi - 41 Griezmann - 32 Müller - 32 Neymar - 31 Benzema - 28 Dybala - 23 Bale - 19 Mandzukic - 13 Morata - 12 Torres - 12 Pogba - 10 One midfielder and he is the most expensive transfer ever. It is our forwards that have to score more, a lot more.

Is it though? And given my stance on selling Van Dijk I'm not exactly above pricing our players out of the market. Good Championship players go for those prices because they guarantee goals in that league and might be able to step up and score in the Premier League. Jay doesn't look remotely like a Premier League player since coming back from injury. Then you have to consider his importance to us, he is the worst of our forwards and the one most likely to be replaced with an upgrade, indeed there was strong speculation that he was to be sent on loan. Good chance that was true and only didn't happen because the transfer for is replacement fell through. He is borderline surplus to requirements at this point, 11m is a great deal for us. Put it this way, would you be happy for us to buy Jay for 11m? I'd be furious.

4-2-3-1 = 4-4-2 Diamond = 4-3-3 A team that features Tadic, Redmond, Boufal and Austin cannot in any way be described as a 4-3-3. And it was under Koeman that we deviated from what Les calls the Southampton Way. What we play now is closer to what Les had in mind, regardless of what peoples feelings about this way of playing are.
-
Seriously? I'd bite their hands off for 11m.

Why is the concept of a release clause so difficult for people in this country to understand? It is a requirement of Portuguese law that his contract should have a release clause, obviously the club will set it at an unrealistic price. The absence of a release clause like our players is the equivalent of having a release clause set at infinity. He would cost much less than €45m.

And by didn't have a great game I meant he tore his ankle ligaments in the 15th minute.
-
Would be cup tied for the Europa unfortunately. Not the only interesting forward on show in that game, Maximilian Philipp of Freiburg is also a good forward. Didn't have a great game though.

January is a difficult time to buy as clubs don't to sell players half way through the season... unless you look at leagues where the season follows the calendar year, like Brazil. So how about this guy (this is his latest goal, fast forward to 3:38): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN9MzxPxOsc He's not the sort of static, limited 9 that Puel and I hate but a highly mobile player with a very good all round game, best forward in the league after City's Gabriel Jesus. Was very good in the Olympics for Brazil too, for whatever that's worth.
-
Yikes, no! Even Ajax fans hate him. In any case it is our forwards that need to score more, a lot more. Even at Barcelona, Real Madrid or Chelsea their forwards (starters and backups) score the bulk of their goals, the rest of the team just chip in with the odd goal. Sebastian Driussi will play for River Plate against Newell's Old Boys tonight at 11pm so will be watching that.

What a load of sh!t. The knee that ended Haaland's career wasn't the one Keane hit (and it's hard not to argue that Haaland had it coming after gloating at Keane when he did his ACL). And Keane didn't start any massively overblown pay structure nor were his demands ludicrous, we ourselves have players earning more what he demanded. Man Utd make massive profits, only fair that the players get their fair share, rather them than the inbred orcs that own them.

Been downgraded from the Dutch Moyes to the Dutch Joe Kinnear apparently. https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/official-koeman-confirmed-as-everton-manager.89131/page-555 I also had to wipe diet coke of my screen when they suggested buying Virgil to replace Jagielka. Has anyone here been to Liverpool and is able to explain why the inhabitants of that city seem to live in some sort of parallel universe.

Please, please, please play Tadic, Redmond and Boufal in a front three. Their speed and technical ability will annihilate them and then I will get to tell everyone who thought that you can't play without a proper striker "I told you so". And something about beating a European giant and taking a huge step towards the knockout stages and getting one step closer to Stockholm and a major trophy which would go down as the greatest accomplishment in this clubs' 131 year history... but those are obviously minor details compared to lording it over the simpletons who think Sebastien Haller or Bas Dost would be good signings.

Supply and demand, a 29 year old David Luiz cost 30m, Bailly cost about the same from Villarreal whose revenue is lower than any premier league club. Prices for centre backs are hugely inflated now because there so few good ones available. City have plenty of homegrown players now, they didn't need another, the homegrown rule isn't as restrictive as it's made out to be and certainly not to the extent that it would massively inflate the prices of homegrown players. They did need a CB though and paid what it took to get him, the reason he cost 50m is because it's what Everton demanded and City's choices in the market were very limited, as they were for everyone who wanted a CB. Look at Wijnaldum, Sissoko or Fellaini, england based foreigners are every bit as overvalued as their english counterparts. And even if homegrown status inflation was real, we have a lot of homegrown players, so that status is worth very little to us. There is no incentive whatsoever for us to give other clubs a non homegrown player discount. Van Dijk will be valued as a key 25 year old player for a club with an annual revenue of around 150m on a contract until 2022 who plays in a position where there is a worldwide shortage of high quality players available for transfer. In other words, a mind blowing fortune that no club in their right mind will likely pay.
-
Incorrect. Stones cost what he did not because he's English but because he plays for an English club, this inflation applies equally to both foreign and English players. Think of it this way, two players equal in every way from position, age, ability, length of contract and importance to the team, but one plays for a club with an annual revenue of 200m and the other for a club with 100m revenue. The players wouldn't cost the same, as the same transfer fee would be of much less value to the club with the higher revenue, they would demand a fee that adequately reflects the player's importance to them. Van Dijk is better than Stones, more important to us than Stones was to Everton, is on a much longer contract and both clubs' annual revenues are about the same. Not only would he not be cheaper, he would actually cost a lot more to buy.
-
Bad call, he's a talentless donkey. Only in the dutch league could he score as many as he does. If Puel has his way we will play 433 with 3 Boufal type players up front, players like Haller have no place with us.
-
Juanpi from Malaga (forward) and Franck Kessié from Atalanta (midfielder). Anything but big immobile lumps up top with Heskey's dribbling and Wanyama's passing ability but are supposedly good at "hold up play".

Now have injuries s our lack of depth starting to show?
Cartman replied to OldNick's topic in The Saints
We don't lack numbers but we do lack better quality than what we currently have in some positions. Martina, Clasie, Long, they would all be surplus if we bought new starting quality players in those positions, pushing Cedric, Davis and Redmond/Austin down to our 2 choice XI. -
Saints 1 Sunderland 0 - Arsenal away in the quarter-final

Why is this an obsession for some people? Forcing your opponent to commit fouls is a good thing. -
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FFS not this nonsense again. Contract until 2022, not going anywhere anytime soon. End of. There is no such thing as English player premium. What there is is an English club premium, it's playing for a premier league club that drives up the price not the nationality of the player. It applies to foreigners too.
-
And Redmond was signed when we didn't have a head coach. So? Puel's job is to improve players, make the team perform as a cohesive unit and to report it all to Les so the recruitment team can identify the players we need to improve. He has no say in who we sign apart from the odd cheap short term stop gap, just as it should be.
-
Didn't someone on here mention him as a player we were interested in this summer? Maybe there is something in this.

Martina not having been sold is his replacement. Won't be surprised if nothing happens in this window.
