I think Rennes were being strung along in case the move to us unexpectedly fell through. He doesn't meet the criteria to automatically get a work permit but players like him always get one on a case by case basis, however since there was a remote chance that he wouldn't get one, the Rennes deal was kept alive. That AS article says that the bureaucracy (ie: work permit process) took over a month and is now all but done, which is why they are now saying that the transfer to us is a done deal.

They have to, they are a daily sports newspaper, there is only so much real news that they can report on every day. But the made up crap is going to be about Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico, Ronaldo, Neymar... not a Valladolid player moving to Southampton, that doesn´t sell papers or clicks.
-
AS has more credibility to me... the amount of detail about the deal in the article I posted (reasons for picking us over Rennes, contract length, salary offered by both clubs) suggests they are probably getting their info direct from his agent. And the fact that the french side are constantly pushing the bizarre work permit angle... I can't think of any £10m+ player being denied a work permit.

Leicester playing the way we did when they beat us 9-0! 😂
-
Everton? Leicester? 😂 Neither of those clubs are bigger than us... here is the definition of "big club". There are just 6 of them. Win trophies? It's not like the club he joined us from have won anything lately is it? And "a guy whose had serious injuries and knows better than most the damage these can have on a career" is more likely to appreciate being fit and playing well for the club he supports, especially after already having been at one of those big clubs, indeed the one that has been winning everything and play in a way that actually suits him. So why risk potentially destabilizing a career that is finally on the right track just to make a move that is a step down from where he already was before.

Can't see the work permit being an issue. £11m players signed to be starters for premier league teams aren't typically rejected work permits.

They can give us Ndombele then.

If I was a player I wouldn't be taking a pay cut either, why would I? So that more money goes into the pockets of the billionaire club owners? Because that is where the money would go, not to NHS nurses or the low paid staff at the club. Are people really so naive that they think the likes of Mike Ashley wouldn't use the government scheme even if the players did take a pay cut? They are well within their rights to tell the owners to go fück themselves, take the money and give to a medical charity instead.

Backbone is one thing UEFA don't have. This whole thing stinks, punishing a club for breaking rules brought in to protect the elite club cartel. If UEFA did have a backbone they would bring the likes of Liverpool, Man Utd, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Bayern back down to earth, it's these cünts that are to blame for the state football is in. This ruling is nothing to celebrate, FFP was designed to stop clubs like us from ever challenging at the top, utterly corrupt.

Massive game in our battle for the 5th place trophy.
-
The bottom 5 are all at 1 point per game or less and then just above them is Brighton who have 2 wins from their last 15 games. I swear I hear "the point total required to stay up will be high" every year and it never happens and it won't again this year, it would require that 4 from Brighton (2 wins in 15, 0 in 6), West Ham (horrible fixture list, 0 wins in 5), Bournemouth (horrible fixture list), Villa and Watford (0 wins in 4) start playing better, and that's assuming Palace (1 win in 11) don't get sucked in. As for Shane, he will almost certainly be taking a pay cut. Hopefully Leeds don't go up and we get Phillips sending Adams the other way and get Ings a partner that can hit a barn door.

Article in Guardian on PL club finances and borrowing inc Saints

The people responsible are no longer there are they? The club wasn't well run, now we don't know if it is or not. And what do you mean by "Don’t forget that unlike every other club we will need to pay Longys agent a fee for extending the deal", agents always get paid when their client signs a new contract, at this club and at all the others. -

Hilarious the sh!t Gao gets even though he has been a clear improvement on the catastrophic administration of the obese heiress (not difficult). Complaints that he doesn't put his own money in to buy players, have people not been looking at Everton? Making massive losses and achieving absolutely nothing. When a club has a turnover of close to 200m you need the money of a sovereign wealth fund for it to make any difference. We don't know how good or bad Gao is as an owner yet, I have said this before it takes time for decisions made at the top to make it's way to results on the pitch, it seems people see Gao coming in August 2017 and that it is his fault that we are abysmal in 2017-18 and 2018-19 despite the groundwork for that mess being made from 2014 at a time when we were good. We have a massive amount of dross clogging up the wage bill, a lot a that needs to be cleared first. New people are now running the club, ever consider that maybe Gao didn't trust the people that were there before to invest properly? Hunter, Reed, Wilson, all gone. Why would Gao let those clowns waste even more money than they already had? I wouldn't, I would do what he did and replace them with people I would consider more competent. We will know a lot more about Gao and the people now running the club after the summer window, you can't extrapolate what will happen based on what has gone on before since from Gao's takeover until now we have just been cleaning up the mess Fat Kat and her minions left behind.

We only need a striker if someone leaves... someone like Long who is out of contract perhaps? Why 2 CM? Well... we only have 3, Romeu has one year left on his contract and Ralph doesn't rate him much, Hojbjerg also has one year left and JWP sometimes fills in at RB. Not saying it's necessarily a bad situation, players need to be offloaded if we are to make way for better ones, but this summer we need both quality and quantity. One or the other won't cut it. Assuming all the players out of contract in 2020 and 2021 leave, then for me we need 1xCB, 1xRB, 1xLB, 3xCM, 1xFW, preferably with some of these players being versatile like the RB also covering LB and the midfielders the various different midfield roles.

Great team that 2004 Copa Libertadores winning Once Caldas side. Viafara extradited on drugs charges and his then teammate Jonathan Fabbro is a convicted nonce!
-
So he did. At least they won, though they were actually 1-0 down when he was sent off so it only makes him look worse. Mouez Hassen was the opposition keeper. The vote results I posted are from January 3rd and refer to the first half of the season, so no, it doesn't include that game.

Hoedt has actually done very well on loan this season, though maybe that says something about the Belgian league. https://www.voetbalprimeur.be/nieuws/910609/vp-11-centrale-verdediger-38-jarige-routinier-opvolger-kompany-en-toptransfers.html Agree with everything else. The way I see it we have been limited in our ability to spend because of the amount of dross we have clogging up the wage bill, this could be the year we finally manage to cut most of them loose.

Palace 0-2 Saints. Wild celebration reaction thread.

No. The start of our demise was the obese Paris Hilton ousting Cortese and letting her incompetent minion Les run the show.
