I thought the first substitution gave them the chance to get back into the game. We needed more pace, not less. Taking off fast Redmond for ponderous Boufal meant they weren't as worried about us on the break. It was a game made for Shane Long to come on.

What we achieved, not just today but for the whole summer, was to break the pattern of being the club that sells all its stars every year. In reality, that was just for 3 summers, but the rhetoric in the media was "Saints do this every single year". This breaks that pattern. Next summer, while we might have to sell VVD, it won't be a case of reading news stories of "How many players are Saints going to sell to bigger clubs this year", it will be "Will Saints sell anybody?". That's important. It changes the image of the club. I think, rather than putting players off from joining us, it will entice players to come. Players can sign for the club knowing all the best players around them won't be sold the following summer and we can sell a vision of actually achieving something in the long term.

I really like Reed. Always felt he was comfortable on the pitch when ever he played. Hopefully this loan will get him game time and do him the world of good before he comes back to us.

I would have thought that the timing of this deal very much revolves around other players that the club are trying to tie down. The talk of getting Alderweireld to sign permanently and getting Clyne to sign a new contract is high on the agenda at the moment and having another of the younger prominent members of the team sign permanently on a long term contract can only be a positive influence on those 2 and others.

Am I the only one that thought Tadic's final ball was dreadful? In the first half at least. His seemed to lose the ball everytime he passed and his crosses were poor. He improved in the second half (as did everyone) and the assist was delightful, but I don't think he had a great game. I was more impressed with Long than Pelle. Pelle seemed to be muscled out of it to me, Long wasn't. And his miss wasn't nearly as bad as was made out. Quinn was right, he was under a lot of pressure from Johnson.

I'm glad Koeman gave him the chance to prove himself. Toured with the team and played in the friendlies unlike last year. Very disappointed it hasn't worked out for him here and hope he bangs them in at Leeds.

Oh no! ALL the other clubs are signing all the right players and we're doing it wrong! Where have I head that before? Last summer during the transfer window, and the summer before that... and the summer before that.... Shane Long is a good footballer. His finishing is lacking, but he's a good forward. Is 12 million too much? Of course it is, but I doubt that's an up front price, plenty of add ons there I'd wager.
