Makes a mockery of the fact he was signed for £12m to be our number 1 in the Premier League. We needed an improvement on McCarthy and somehow ended up with a downgrade. Poor signing.

Number one priority should be a new goalkeeper. Until that happens, I'm not really interested in who else is coming in. A goalkeeper the outfield players can rely on is key to our survival.

I haven't seen him play before but Fernandes seem an intriguing signing. Apparently, he asked to leave to get more game time. Sporting fans are disappointed to see him go but at the same time question if he's yet capable of playing ahead of the likes of Alcaraz, Smallbone and Aribo. Just how much they know our players I don't know. Probably unreasonable to expect him to be anything more than a bit part player this season. To be honest, it's hard to get excited about any signing until I know we've addressed the glaring weakness between the sticks.

I agree. We all know his shortfalls. Apparently Russell doesn't.

Promising that Sugawara and Downes particularly look up to it at this level but I'll only be encouraged once we get a new goalkeeper and CF through the door otherwise days like today will be a recurring theme. Todays system was only possible because we still have KWP as well. Keeping him is essential if we want to play like we did in the first 45 minutes.

It's depressing because everybody was predicting McCarthy would gift them a goal before the game. We played very well at times and it was all undone by a predictable mistake. Replacing him really is a matter of survival.

Russell already knows he can't make basic passes. At least he should. Encouraging that sort of play with McCarthy is madness.

At least. I don't think Newcastle wouldn't have played the second half the way they did at 0-0. They protected their 1-0 and challeneged us to break them down. Not sure they'd have settled with a point, at least not initially with the expectation they would win comfortably.

We have tried to pass the ball in this half. The subs made us worse. Good moments in the first 45 and you could see just how riled up we made them but ultimately this has been a huge missed opportunity. BBD missed an easy header and Armstrong anonymous. Over an hour against 10 men and we couldn't score. Real lack of quality in our forward line. If we don't get a new goalkeeper we have no chance.

It's a joke we're losing this game but we've looked poor since the subs. Not our day. A lot of good work done but nobody wants to shoot and McCarthy inevitably gifted the opposition a goal.

Shame Sugawara's not taking these corners.

Nobody's dumping on him after 1 error. We're highlighting the fact McCarthy has made that exact mistake in EVERY pre-season game and yet we continue to try it expecting different results. We know he can't do it. We shouldn't be expecting him to do it.

Management had plenty of warning in pre-season about McCarthy. We all said if those mistakes happened in the Premier League we'd get punished. He can't play that role Russell FFS!
