I doubt you’ll find many, if any, non saints fans who say JWP is a better holding midfielder than Phillips. I don’t think he’s underrated. He’s just an average middle of the road premier league CM. At some point, you’ve got to ask if it’s everyone underrating or you overrating.
-
Ask any Brighton fan and they’ll tell you that He’s completely changed the way that Brighton play. They’re actually a really good team but they’re just lacking a half decent center forward. They create a lot of good chances, just don’t put them away. However, Just keeping Brighton in the league is an achievement, to be honest. Given the resources at someone like Everton / Tottenham I think he’d do really well.

To be honest I disagree. I think free kicks aside, Prowse doesn’t offer anything more than the others and probably isn’t as good. Form dropped off (as it did for all our squad) from December. Rice & Phillips will be the 2 holding players, JWP isn’t defensively strong enough (as shown when Romeu was out and we were torn apart) to play there. These 2 are better options. Henderson is a great leader and a born winner. Always going to go, even if he hardly plays in the group stages. Mount is clearly a much better (and different player) than JWP. It was likely a shoot out between prowse and Bellingham is just a better player. Played at a higher level and looked very good in the Champions league. Probably taken with an eye on the World Cup next year. 4 RB’s is excessive (although I suspect Walker / James will play at CB in a 3), so you could argue dropping one of those for another midfielder for Tripper or Trent, but I think even if he did Lingaard would have been picked ahead of JWP.
-
Origi wouldn’t be a bad shout as an ings replacement
-
Almost certainly would have known about both as played against them the season before. I suspect it would have been a case of us having a list of players of which they were included and he picked them out. I doubt Pelle was on the ‘black box’ not our traditional type of signing.
-
It means if we make another window or 2 of signing players with the ability of Djenepo and adams, whilst losing those with the ability of ings we won’t stay in the league.
-
We’re also skint and going to lose our best player. Yet finished above us last season... I’d say the jury is still out on recent signings. Diallo started promising but regressed, Salisu looks good but hardly been exposed. Djenepo and adams aren’t good enough to keep us in the league. if we sign a few more Like these, we’ll be in big trouble. We’ve actually got worse rather than better, so that’s a concern. Manager is very tactically naive. As shown, If plan A is countered, then we’re fucked.
-
I do think fitness and high intensity first half of games does play a bit of a part, however we’ve been like it for a while and a few managers now. Stephens aside, who just isn’t very good, we don’t have anyone overly vocal at the back organising. We need a Jonny evans type buy. Where we’ll find that I really do not know.
-
Numerous leads thrown away, numerous collapses, 2 9-0 defeats, numerous non performances (including one in the FA cup semi final). Absolutely not ‘pony’. Many players who don’t care. No real leaders. When the going gets tough we roll over and give up.
-
We could do with a couple more Armstrong / Steve Davis / JWP types in my opinion. Maybe not the best players (good enough to hold their own), but a good old fashioned, hard working influence in the dressing room. Get 2 or 3 of those in and it would transform the dynamic in the dressing room.

When did I say he’d signed a deal? What I’m saying is if he had signed one (I.e committed to staying) then he’d be on the promotion. He hasn’t committed to staying, so he’s not on there. Which to me would suggest the club aren’t as ‘confident’ he’ll stay as they are suggesting. From the bits I’ve heard, this was a few months back mind, I’ll be amazed if he stays. I think the issue is, he’s second / 3rd choice of a few clubs so this one will drag on.
-
Yep. If he had signed a deal, he’s on the promotional launch without a doubt.
-
Haha fair enough.

KWP was 3rd in the pecking order behind doherty and aurier. It’s pretty common knowledge that Rose fell out with Jose, hence why he didn’t make the registered squad. He was also had a loan spell with Newcastle last season and by all accounts done pretty well. Im not saying he’s the answer, but your statement about not being able to get into the Tottenham squad so therefore not good enough for us, is a silly one. Champ.

Like errrrr Walker Peters....
-
I’d prefer more white than red, but I like it. Simple and effective like most of the ‘retro’ kits. Hummel seem to be ‘nailing’ it recently.
-
You think, as a person who at the moment doesn’t have anything positive to say about the club, that I’m always?... only one crackpot who’s wrong here buddy... Its chapel end. I exposed him... not wrong about everything it seems 😉
-
Buendia, if only we had a chance. Like pereira at West Brom, but better. Amazed he stayed at Norwich last season destined for a big club.
-
More that he was unemployed, was affordable, a bigish name and most likely applied for the role. Not sure this was a hidden gem, well scouted, appointment like Poch ‘apparently’ was.
-
I don’t disagree that, the suggest squad above, is probably a CB short. But that CB is there for cover in the unlikely event of 2 injuries to our CB’s. There’s a argument that Rice can cover there, worse case. 1 back up CB over 1 back up forward, clearly doesn’t make it the worse squad you’ve ever seen though, does it. Rice, Henderson, Bellingham, Phillips & mount is ample cover in midfield. Foden and Lingaard are both listed as midfielders in the last England squad, so that argument doesn’t stand up either.
-
Personally, (excluding McCarthy, that is an awful shout) I’d probably take out mings for Godfrey and maybe Add JWP for maybe Saka and that’d be pretty close to what I’d take. Adding 2 (pretty average players who probably won’t play), doesn’t contribute to ‘the worst squad I’ve ever seen’. That was clearly a massive exaggeration. But a reason to go with more attackers is that if we’re behind in a game, there the players who can change it for you. Foden and Grelish haven’t played outside a front 3 for their club (this season - the have previously), but that’s not to say they couldn’t for England. After all, the competition for places is a lot stronger. He’ll likely have a settled 11- 16 that’ll play pretty much every game, so for 10 or so tournament games, you don’t need a huge amount of depth and balance. You need a little bit of cover and players who can win you a game. Attackers do that.
-
Not really. Walker and James have both played as a 3rd CB in a 3 and Walker done it pretty well at the last World Cup. Foden and Grealish could be seen as players who can play in the middle of the park in a more advanced role (if you play a 3) and we don’t really have any other CM’s (you could argue a case for JWP) that are ripping up trees to get in there. We are strongest, by a long way, in attack. Why not play to your strengths and go top heavy. I’d rather that than chucking a CB or CM who aren’t very good and will just sit on the bench the whole tournament. ‘the worst squad I’ve ever seen’ is a massive over exaggeration.

Jannik Vestergaard - Official: Signs for Leicester
SKD replied to ChiefScummer's topic in The Saints
Yeah agree, our best CB (not hard) from what I’ve seen of him. Mostly out of position as well. I’d happily sell Vestergaard and replace him with an older head who can play Right side of CB to partner Salisu with Bednerak and Stephens as cover. -
Or play him either as he absolutely doesn’t suit our style
