I saw this, this morning and thought I’d check the tweets. I have to say, whilst poor taste and irresponsible, I didn’t really think they were that bad - like who would actually be offended by them!? Feels like a mountain being made out of a mole hill and everyone desperately trying to be on the right side of history. What is the outcome Of the investigation going to be? Yes he tweeted them? Is he a racist, probably not. Has his tweets really affected anyone, no.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with this post. Especially that regarding JWP, as you said, competing with Henderson who as soon as was fit was always going to be in. I don’t actually have a major issue with taking Maguire. Probably our best CB and if he can play in the later rounds (if we get there) then he should play. It’s more taking Cody and Mings who neither are good enough and that was clear for everyone. Bringing in white is because Southgate has now realised that. White and another (Tamori has apparently been doing well in Italy) should have been in from the start. JWP probably should have been Trents replacement. I think the only saving grace is now with Henderson being not 100% we most likely now won’t play 5 with 2 holding CM’s. I think the gig is up for Southgate now though, generally speaking, the majority seem to be against him and his negative tactics a poor tournament and I don’t think we’ll have a choice but to replace him.

A squad containing players from Villa, West Brom, Brighton, wolves and Leeds this just clearly isn’t true. generally speaking, the reason they play for the bigger teams, is because they’re better players....

But what would be more attractive as a player? ‘We want to break into the top 6 and we’re signing XYZ to do so’ or ‘we want to tread water and potentially finish top half’. If it happens or not is another debate, but clearly the intent would be attractive to players like JWP.

Not sure about that. He’s trained with the squad and gave a good account of himself in the friendlies he’s played. Another season like this one and he’ll be on the plane for the World Cup next year, without a doubt.

If (big if) they can keep Grealish, Villa are going to be a very decent side next season. Buendia a £30m is a great signing for them. Id actually go as far as saying Buendia is a very very good replacement for Grealish.

Doherty has always played as a wing back / Defensive winger in a 343 (or variation of). He’s basically not good enough going forward to be a winger or defensively to be a full back. Naturally, his goal involvement will be more than Semedo who has pretty much always played as a Orthodox RB. Wolves even changed to a back 4 this season. Just because he isn’t as good going forward as Doherty (who was found wanting when tried in a back 4 because he can’t actually defend), that doesn’t make him a very defensive RB. I’d say Semedo is your modern day full back, similar to KWP.

Raw talent, lemina is right up there. Has it all other than a decent, hard working attitude.

Just looking at the stats again (I know your a stats man) in a bit more detail, I’m struggling to see how you’ve come to this conclusion. Phillips has played 1,000 less minutes (c.11 games) less than JWP, if Phillips had the same game time, his defensive stats (tackles, clearances, headers etc.) would exceed that of JWP. JWP is better offensively though, that is for sure, however he’s competing against Henderson, Mount and Bellingham for that position. All of which are better than him. Personally, I just don’t see a time in which JWP gets in the team. Against the stronger teams, Rice is a shoe in all day long. I think the player most unlucky to miss out is probably Lingard. He’s someone who has the most potential (of those left out) to impact and change a game we’re chasing.
