  1. The police are not going to want to make it too easy though. A small stadium which is not hemmed in by residential areas will make their job a bit easier. Brighton would be an obvious choice.
  2. Because hordes of local kids will see it as a great opportunity to get close to the players. Imagine if it had been at the Dell, for example. Are you telling me that all those people in terraced houses would have stayed indoors when that was going on next door to them?
  3. Yes, I remember 70/71 as being a particularly good season, which would also explain your username.
  4. My first Saints game was in 1963 but from 1980 to 2013, I was working abroad in various countries around the world, generally only catching 1 or 2 games each season when I flew back for visits, and the years I regret missing are definitely the early 80s, which I mostly followed from afar. The best years were the late 70s and early 80s. The late 70s were by far the best for atmosphere at games but the early 80s were the best for success on the pitch, with the team coming so close to doing the double in 1984. Things seemed to deteriorate after the departure of McMenemy, which was compounded by the post-Heysel decline of English football and the Dell's capacity becoming ever smaller. Since then, the Pochettino/Koeman years, 2013-16, have been the best. Looking back and remembering how I felt at the end of each season and how much I was looking forward to the next one: 1) 1981/84 2) 1976/79 3) 2013/16
  5. Correct.
  6. No, I mean 1945/46, which was the first full Football League season to finish after the war, with 42 games played by each team, although it tends to get overlooked.
  7. Thanks. The funny thing is the semi-final programme from Stamford Bridge, which I've also still got, was the same price. In which positions did Saints & Pompey finish in the Football League in 1946?
  8. 20p. I've still got mine.
  9. A neutral venue with all of the players and staff from around the country packed into it would be the sporting equivalent of a Corona Princess cruise ship.
  10. My apologies. I'd not noticed that before. Just ignore my last question.
  11. Has some new rule been introduced? Sorry if I've missed it but where is it?
  12. In 1946 which team finished higher in the Football League, Saints or Pompey?
  13. They don't make them like this any more: His name is Ron Davies, he's the leader of the team: the greatest centre forward that the world has ever seen. You always can rely on him to score the vital goal and as for Tony Hateley, you can stick him up your hole....Da Da Davies, Da Da Davies, he's the greatest centre forward in the land.
  14. This was about as close as we got to it: https://www.premierleague.com/video/single/1425234
  15. Thank you for all the hard work you put into that. It is a fantastic site. Well done.
  16. Yes, I remember that '76 Charity Shield game at Wembley very well. I've never seen so many p!ssed up Saints fans at any other game before or since. Wembley had to put protective netting up over the players' tunnel after that game because drunk Saints fans' had pelted the Liverpool team with bottles and just about everything else they could lay their hands on. Ironically, I always thought the behaviour of the Saints hordes that day was one of the reasons Keegan signed for us. He must have thought we were the most passionate, fanatical fans in the world to get that worked up over a Charity Shield game. The Liverpool fans were church mice in comparison. It was 0-0 at half-time but Toshack scored the game's only goal with an assist from Keegan. To be honest, they were clearly the better team on the day.
  17. It's incredibly hard to choose between Lambert, Pellè and Ings yet finding one goalkeeper is equally difficult but for different reasons. Forster Clyne van Dijk Fonte Bertrand Wanyama Lallana Tadic Mané Lambert Pellè Subs Boruc Shaw Alderweireld Schneiderlin Ings
  18. Correct
  19. The Urban dictionary has even stranger entries than Wikipedia: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Portsmouth https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Scummer
  20. Which team have Saints played the most games against?
  21. He appears in this article too: https://spartacus-educational.com/Fblack.htm
  22. See post #458 above.
  23. Correct!
