The Argentinian diving before that was comical though. Twice in the opening minutes Argentinian players dived screaming to the ground when there was no contact whatsoever from the bemused Saudi players and on both occasions the ref gave a free-kick. If England come up against them, their cheating is going to be as big a game changer as Messi. There are more Qataris supporting Argentina today against their bitter rivals Saudi Arabia than there were supporting Qatar in their opening game, although Latin Americans, especially the Mexicans, seem to have travelled to Qatar in huge numbers so there are a good number of Argentinians there too, hence the Argentinian shirts on all four sides of the ground and their flags behind both goals.

What is the best goal you've ever seen live at a Saints game?
Nordic Saint replied to tunit's topic in The Saints
Mick Channon's at the Dell v Coventry in 1971. Unfortunately, it wasn't televized as not many games were in those days, or it would still be being shown on TV. He took the ball from his own goalkeeper and then ran the length of the pitch, deliberately attempting to dribble past every player in the Coventry team. Half of them tried to tackle him, before he beat the goalkeeper with a shot into the bottom corner of the net. I've never seen any goal come close to that at top flight level. It was even better than the famous Maradona goal v England. Saints introduced a Goal of the Season award for the first time in the Club's history, just to commemorate it. The second best I saw live was Le Tissier's at Blackburn in 1994. -
Don't be so shortsighted.

Do you want Nathan Jones to Manage Southampton Football Club?
Nordic Saint replied to Rivers's topic in The Saints
It looks like that was Nathan Jones' agent's first post here. If it was a Luton fan, they wouldn't be praising him to the hilt, hoping that we'd take him off their hands, or perhaps, after their recent poor run of just 1 win in 5, they would. This is where Stoke were when they sacked him: Pos Team Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts 1 West Bromwich Albion 14 7 6 1 26 17 9 27 2 Preston North End 14 7 4 3 27 16 11 25 3 Leeds United 14 7 4 3 17 8 9 25 4 Swansea City 14 7 4 3 18 13 5 25 5 Bristol City 15 6 7 2 24 21 3 25 6 Sheffield Wednesday 14 7 3 4 18 10 8 24 7 Fulham 14 6 5 3 23 14 9 23 8 Queens Park Rangers 14 7 2 5 24 26 -2 23 9 Charlton Athletic 14 6 4 4 21 16 5 22 10 Nottingham Forest 13 6 4 3 17 12 5 22 11 Birmingham City 14 7 1 6 14 16 -2 22 12 Brentford 14 6 3 5 18 12 6 21 13 Hull City 14 5 4 5 20 20 0 19 14 Cardiff City 14 4 6 4 19 20 -1 18 15 Millwall 14 4 6 4 16 19 -3 18 16 Derby County 14 4 6 4 16 20 -4 18 17 Blackburn Rovers 14 4 3 7 17 21 -4 15 18 Wigan Athletic 14 4 3 7 12 19 -7 15 19 Luton Town 14 4 2 8 21 25 -4 14 20 Huddersfield Town 14 3 4 7 16 21 -5 13 21 Reading 13 3 3 7 14 19 -5 12 22 Middlesbrough 14 2 6 6 11 17 -6 12 23 Barnsley 15 1 6 8 14 29 -15 9 24 Stoke City 14 2 2 10 13 25 -12 8 -
Will there be any anti-Jones protests at the game tonight?
Nordic Saint replied to once_bitterne's topic in The Saints
They could play videos of him that we could all laugh at, twitching on the touchline, biting his fingernails, looking like he urgently needs to go to the toilet. -
Do you want Nathan Jones to Manage Southampton Football Club?
Nordic Saint replied to Rivers's topic in The Saints
No, he wasn't. Moyes had no failure in his managerial career whatsoever when Everton appointed him. His win rate at Preston was 47.86%. Nathan Jones was a disaster in his year at Stoke and his win rate was just 15.8%. His current Luton team have won just 1 of their last 5 games and only scored 22 goals in 20 games this season. He's hardly on the crest of a wave. -
Yes, it's been said that he doesn't like to pick young players. if you look at his transfer record at both Luton and Stoke, he tends to bring in a lot of older players in their early 30s either on loan or on free transfers. The only time he ever spent a biggish fee in his managerial career was the £8mil he paid Burnley to take the 31-year-old Sam Vokes to Stoke, where he was such a flop that Stoke let him go to Wycombe on a one-year contract for a minimal fee. He doesn't appear to be very good at finding strikers as his teams don't score many goals. His Luton team this season have only scored 22 in 19 games which isn't much better than Saints' 12 in 14.

I don't think the Club will appoint Nathan Jones if it becomes very obvious to them that the fans are dead against it and, right now, through social media and all Saints-related sites it is. They may have put his name out there just to test fans' reaction to or he may just be a decoy so we will be pleasantly surprised when the new manager is announced and it isn't him.

Saints 1-4 Newcastle - Match Thread

Perraud did much more than that. He was the only one of our players who gave 100% plus and kept fighting for a result right to the end. He deserved that goal.
-
Let's be honest about this. We don't even have a proper home end for away fans to get into. The Chapel is supposedly it but it's full of families, old people and some of our most passive fans. Meanwhile our most vocal and supposedly hardest fans lurk in the corners of the away end, where the away fans take the p!ss out of them. Most of our homes sections might just as well be described as neutral. It's not as if anyone sings in them or displays any partisan support. We've messed this up for ourselves. It's no wonder away fans rule the roost at St Mary's. I can't see the same thing happening at Newcastle.

He's such an important player for Spurs, that Conte almost never subs him and of course, that has paid off in the Champions League: Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg - Stats 22/23 | Transfermarkt

Saints 1-4 Newcastle - Match Thread
Nordic Saint replied to Ivan Katalinic's 'tache's topic in The Saints
My first ever Saints game was a 2-0 win v Newcastle in 1963. We have a good home record v Newcastle. At one time we had a 17-match unbeaten run against them at home. The 4-2 followed by the two consecutive 4-0 wins in 2013/2014 were fairly typical of how much we've dominated them down here. They don't travel well. So, we should win this one. Of course we don't have a goal scorer nowadays so it will probably only be 1-0. A penalty or own goal? -
Great player and wonderful character. I have followed his career both in football and racing. The first time I saw him play was when he was a 16-year old playing for Southampton Resrves against Brighton Reserves in the Football Combination in 1964. The only Saints player I'd ever seen anywhere near that skilful before was Terry Paine. I was so excited. I remember going home and telling my Dad that I'd just seen a brilliant young player and he was going to be great. His special knack was getting to the byline and he was a brilliant dribbler. I saw him score so many wonderful goals for Saints and England but unfortunately the best one wasn't televized - not many matches were in those days. It was against Coventry in the old First Division at the Dell. He took the ball from his goalkeeper and then proceeded to run the length of the pitch and very deliberately tried to dribble past every single player in the Coventry team, just because he knew he could. 7 of them took him on, including the goalkeeper who he rounded before slotting the ball into the net. Saints instigated a goal of the season award for the first time just to commemorate that goal. It remains the best goal I've ever seen. The only one I've seen live that comes close to it was Le Tissier's at Blackburn. As an England player I especially remember him as the hammer of the Scots. He always turned it on against them and revelled in the hostile atmosphere at Hampden Park. As a boy, I got his autograph several times after games. He was always approachable. Then one day he turned up at my front door. He didn't want his autographs back. Our next door neighbour was the sister of the girl who became his first wife and she'd told him I was a Saints fan. He offered me a free ticket in the Upper West Stand but I told him thank you but I preferred to stand behind the goal. I probably should have just taken it but I was quite awestruck at the time. There was a little racing clique at the Dell: Channon, Keegan and Ball. It was the main hobby for all of them but for Channon it was much more than that. When he started training racehorses, my first memory of him having a winner was Purple Rock at 50/1 at Carlisle, which my uncle made a lot of money on. I learned that if ever he sent a horse north, you should put money on it. I am a big racing fan and I often saw him at racecourses around the country. He was especially good at training 2-year-old fillies and in 2001 he trained the perfect one: Queen's Logic. She was his dream horse and was named the European champion two-year-old filly. The racing world was her oyster but the day before her first classic, the 1000 Gunineas, she went lame. She then developed a series of health problems and never raced again. Mick must have been devastated. Coincidentally, his last winner was also a 2-year-old filly, Caernarfon, who beat a strong field in a listed race at Newmarket. Maybe she'll be "the one". He'll be sadly missed from the racing scene but of course his son is taking over from him.

I bet Girona wish they'd got Diallo instead.

Romeu's Girona team drew at Real Madrid today. He seems to be having a great influence there. Real Madrid 1-1 Girona FC: Empate merengue en casa (lamediatitular.com)

You beat me to it.

He was very good today. The last ditch defensive tackle and the assist for the goal were outstanding.
-
I'd prefer Edozie to Adam Armstrong but maybe he's not quite ready for the full 90 minutes yet. In the short time he was on the pitch, he was our best attacking player. On one occasion in the 2nd half, Adam Armstrong found himself through on goal and you knew it was 100% certain he wouldn't make anything of it. He scuffed the ball to a defender and seemed almost relieved that he didn't have to shoot. His nerves are shot. It's cruel leaving him out there.
-
You should have watched Torquay v Altrincham on BT Sport. Brillliant game.
-
Exactly that. We know he has pace - he hit the fastest speed recorded in the Premier League one week - but he has no anticipation and is incredibly slow off the mark.
-
Interestingly, Diallo, a player I've long been a critic of, came on near the end and showed everyone how it's done with some really clever ball retention. It made those 5 minutes of added time so much more comfortable. Che Adams also did his bit, of course. He was terrific throughout.
-
He may just be a natural at it. You don't get that many games without scoring by shooting at goal. I thought he might one day be in the Shane Long class for it but now he's even beginning to rival the great Benali. Like all of the great non-goal scorers, he's definitely destined to become a cult hero with our fans.
-
1 goal in his last 25 games. There isn't much to fade from considering he's supposed to be a striker.
